How to Get Out of Incognito Mode
Leaving Incognito is just closing the private window or tabs — but the session only truly ends, and its cookies are only deleted, once every private window is closed.
On desktop (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)
- Close the Incognito or private window with the X button.
- Or press Ctrl+Shift+W (⌘+Shift+W on Mac) to close the whole window at once.
- Make sure no other private windows are still open — the private session is shared between them.
On Android (Chrome)
- Tap the tab switcher, switch to the Incognito pane, and tap Close all Incognito tabs.
- Or pull down the notification shade and tap Close all Incognito tabs in the Chrome notification.
On iPhone (Safari)
- Tap the tabs button, then swipe from Private back to your regular tab group.
- Switching alone leaves private tabs open — close them with the X on each tab to end the session.
On iPhone (Chrome)
- Tap the tab grid, switch to the Incognito pane.
- Tap Edit → Close All Incognito Tabs.
FAQ
- Does closing Incognito delete everything?
- Closing every private window deletes the session's history, cookies, and site data from your device. Files you downloaded and bookmarks you saved are kept.
- Why does my browser always open in Incognito?
- A policy, shortcut flag, or parental-control setting is forcing Incognito. Check the shortcut's target for an -incognito flag, or review enterprise policies at chrome://policy.
