How to Turn Off Private Browsing on iPhone
To leave Private Browsing in Safari, switch back to your regular tabs — and if you want Private Browsing gone for good, Screen Time can remove it entirely.
Switch back to regular tabs in Safari
- Tap the tabs button (two overlapping squares).
- Swipe right from Private to your regular tab group ([n] Tabs or Start Page).
- Tap any tab to continue browsing normally.
Close all private tabs
- In the tab switcher, stay on the Private group.
- Long-press Done, then tap Close All Tabs.
- Private tabs stay open until you close them — closing Safari or locking the phone doesn't do it for you.
Close Incognito tabs in Chrome
- Tap the tab grid, switch to the Incognito pane.
- Tap Edit → Close All Incognito Tabs.
Disable Private Browsing permanently
- Open Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Enable restrictions, tap Content Restrictions → Web Content, and choose Limit Adult Websites.
- The Private option disappears from Safari's tab switcher.
FAQ
- Do private tabs close by themselves?
- No. Safari keeps private tabs open — even across restarts — until you close them yourself. iOS can lock them behind Face ID, but they remain open.
- Will turning off Private Browsing show my past private history?
- No. Nothing browsed in Private mode was saved to history, so there's nothing to reveal after you switch back.
