How to Go Incognito on Mac
Every Mac browser has private browsing one keyboard shortcut away. Safari and Chrome use ⌘+Shift+N; Firefox uses ⌘+Shift+P.
Safari
- Press ⌘+Shift+N, or choose File → New Private Window.
- Private windows show a dark address bar and a Private badge.
Chrome
- Press ⌘+Shift+N, or choose File → New Incognito Window.
- The window switches to the dark Incognito theme with the hat-and-glasses icon.
Firefox
- Press ⌘+Shift+P, or choose File → New Private Window.
Microsoft Edge
- Press ⌘+Shift+N, or choose File → New InPrivate Window.
Make Safari always open in Private Browsing
- Open Safari → Settings → General.
- Set "Safari opens with" to "A new private window".

- Does private browsing on Mac hide my activity from the network?
- No. It only prevents Safari, Chrome, or Firefox from saving history and cookies on your Mac. Your router, employer, or internet provider can still see the sites you visit.
