How to Turn Off Private Browsing on iPad
On an iPad, Private Browsing is a tab group in Safari, so turning it off means switching back to your regular tabs — and closing the private ones if you want the session gone. To remove private mode from Safari entirely, use Screen Time.
Switch out of Private Browsing (Safari)
- Tap the tabs button, or open the sidebar with the icon in the top-left corner.
- Choose your regular tab group (for example Start Page or [number] Tabs) instead of Private.
- Switching alone leaves private tabs open — touch and hold Private in the sidebar or tab group menu and choose Close All Tabs to end the session.

- Tap the tab grid and switch to the Incognito pane.
- Tap Edit → Close All Incognito Tabs.
Block Private Browsing permanently
- Open Settings → Screen Time and tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Turn the toggle on, then tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games → Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites. The Private option disappears from Safari's tab groups.
If Screen Time's Share Across Devices is on, this restriction syncs to your other Apple devices too. Protect it with a Screen Time passcode if you're setting it up for a child's iPad.

- Once every private tab is closed, Safari discards the session's history, cookies, and site data. Bookmarks you saved and files you downloaded are kept, and your network or internet provider may still have their own records.
